To the ends of the earth… the Amazon

We don’t have to look very far in this world to see that there are a lot of hurting and needy people. That is the case here in the Oxford Hills area of Maine, and the same seems to be true pretty much everywhere. There is a group of followers of Jesus Christ here in South Paris who are asking God to show us ways we can reach out to these people wherever they are, even to the ends of the earth, and show them God’s love.

We have had the opportunity to connect with some like-minded believers in the Amazon Region of Brazil. I have been getting to know these folks since 2001, and I believe God is working in the hearts of some of them. I hope He is preparing to work through them to get the gospel out to many in that area. I have been asking God to cause a movement there. Not just to see a few people respond to God’s offer of forgiveness, not just to see a few churches planted, but to see many embrace Christ, and many churches started, all over that region.

The population of the Amazon basin is about 10 million people. Some say that there are 30,000 villages along the Amazon and its tributaries, and that only about 10% of these villages have a church where the gospel of Christ is proclaimed. That leaves many thousands of people who need to experience God’s love and salvation from sin. If they are to be reached, it will not be by North Americans, but by the Brazilians themselves.

It is our goal to motivate, encourage, and equip Brazilian Christians to make disciples of their neighbors. The gospel of Christ naturally flies on the wings of relationships. Many believers in the cities and villages of the Amazon have friends and relatives living in other remote villages along the rivers. We hope to see them use these existing connections to get the good news to those who need to hear it.
