What Do You Want?

The other day someone came to speak with me. They were looking for a little advice; they shared many different parts of their life with me but never really asked a question. So finally I asked, “What do you want?” You see, if someone wants help or direction, you need to know what they want the help with before you can give it to them. Often you will find that what we think we want help with and what we really need help with are miles apart. There is often a big gap between want and need. The story of Peter and John in Acts 3 comes to mind as I think about “What do you want?” There was a man who was lame sitting by the temple gate and as the disciples went by He asked for money. He thought that was what he wanted. But it really wasn’t. What he wanted was help. Someone to change his life. Peter looked at him and said, “I don’t have money to give, but I have what you really need and I will give that to you.  In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up and walk.” You see, giving him money would have just prolonged the struggle, but giving him Jesus brought healing.

What have you been saying you want? I am sure it is good. I am sure it is what you feel would bring fullness to your life. But it is probably not what you need. Why don’t you try asking God for what you need this week? I am sure it will look very different from what you think you want.
