Wandering
“For the Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He knows your going through this great wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing.” Deuteronomy 2:7
I talk to my phone. No, not the way you are supposed to, like, “Hey, Siri–where’s the closest place to get a good burger?” I say things like, “Why are you telling me to turn here? There’s no road! Why are you saying, ‘Arrived!’ I have most definitely not arrived!” I hate not knowing where I am going. To be fair, many times that I am lost, it’s my own doing! Yes, I’m a typical guy–I don’t like asking for directions.
The book of Deuteronomy is a recounting of the previous 40+ years of Israel’s history. The major feature of that period was the people wandering in the wilderness due to their unbelief that God would give them victory in the Promised Land. As Moses is retelling the story, he makes the statement above. Notice that even in the wilderness, even with all of the uncertainty, even with all of the pain and frustration–God was with them and He provided for them.
I don’t need to tell you that this life features “wilderness times,” times when it feels like nothing is going well, that every turn is confusing and no progress is being made. And you probably understand that sometimes those times of wandering are a result of mistakes you have made and sometimes they are things God has put before you to walk through. However, child of God, know this–that whether you are in the weeds by your own doing or not, God never forsakes His own and He always provides. Keep going.
