Wait
Psalm 27:14 “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the
Lord!”
In the next few years, I will cross the half century mark in my life. Over the last 10 years
especially, I have realized that despite my growth and maturity (physically, emotionally
and spiritually), I still have many weaknesses. One of the ways in which I struggle is in
the area of patience. I am not naturally a patient person. Ever. I always want things to
be done, to be right, to be fixed, to be organized, to be neat, to be finished. I not
typically a guy who, as many do, “enjoys the journey.” Spiritually, this has always been
a challenge for me. We are promised in Philippians 1:6 that God will complete His work
in us. That sounds great to me! Completion. However, in our spiritual lives, that
complete maturity will not be seen until the “day of Jesus Christ.” John says that “what
we will be has not yet appeared.” (I John 3:2) So, what must I do in the meantime? Of
course, Scripture gives us many commands for following Christ and for growth, and we
must be obedient to them. But Psalm 27:14 gives us an important piece – wait. Be
patient. Wait for God to act. I must wait for Him to act in my heart, in my
circumstances, and in regard to my future and destiny. Waiting is difficult. Yet when I
believe in the goodness of my God (in the prior verse, Psalm 27:13), I can be confident
that He will accomplish His plans in and for my life.
