The Whispers of Your Life
by Talia Knowles
“Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And a voice said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 1 Kings 19:11-13
I was reading my Bible a few nights ago and these three verses jumped out at me. Elijah is standing before God, and the Lord passes by the prophet. Then these strong and powerful wonders of the earth erupt; first a windstorm, then an earthquake, then a fire. But the Bible says the Lord wasn’t in any of those strong and powerful things. Finally there was the sound of a gentle whisper. Elijah knew God was in that whisper and covered his face.
It amazes me that God, the ruler of this universe, the creator of Heaven and earth, chose to reveal himself to Elijah in the quietest of ways. He proved His power by sending the wind and the earthquake and the fire before Him, but He chose not to be in any of those things. He was in the gentle whisper.
What does that tell us about our God? I know that He wants to be in every part of our lives, not just the big ones. This can relate to many things, from prayer to day-to-day life. We often pray about the big things, but what about the little ones? If He is God over the windstorm, earthquake, and the fire, then He too is God over the faintest whispers of your life. He wants to be in all of your life, not just the big things. Sometimes the smallest or simplest things are the biggest in God’s eyes.
