The Unchanging Word

“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” (Isaiah 40:8)

When we built our house 14 years ago, we took great care to plant our front lawn. Beautiful loam was spread. We seeded it, fertilized it, and watered it carefully. Soon, bright green blades were pushing up through the mulch hay. Very shortly after, I was mowing our new lawn! But when the dog days of summer came, and the rain stopped, my beautiful grass dried up. Every year, it is the same battle–get the grass growing in the spring and try to keep it looking healthy all summer.

Grass has a pretty short shelf life! It looks nice for a few months if you are lucky, then it dies. Actually, that’s a good description of everything on this earth–it looks good for a while, then starts to fade. Everything, that is, except for the Truth of God’s Word. Its principles are timeless. The 10 commandments are still valid 3500 years later! The instructions laid down for the church in the New Testament still guide us today. There is still only one way to the Father- through Jesus Christ (John 14:6).

The entire world is searching everywhere for the guiding principles that will result in a peaceful, equitable society. The philosophies of humanism, socialism, communism, Marxism, capitalism (and others) have been tried many times through the centuries. They all fall short. The only philosophy of life that has ever worked–and still does–is biblical Christianity. Surrendering our lives to God, humbly trusting Jesus Christ for salvation, and living a life of selfless love and service to those around us. This alone will satisfy our souls. This alone will change the world. Let’s live it together.
