The Secret Things

“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.”
Deuteronomy 29:29

This is one of my favorite verses in the entire Bible. I remember sitting in theology class listening to the conversations going around and around as we discussed the Trinity, or election versus free will, or the eternal generation of the Son (I could go on!). To plumb the depths of the character and the holiness of God is something that only God Himself can do fully. “The secret things belong to the Lord.” I believe that there are some aspects of Truth that we cannot fully comprehend, so there will always be a need for faith as we approach God (Hebrews 11:6). And yet, there is so much we can know about God, about the redemption He offers us in Christ and about what kind of people we ought to be! “The things that are revealed belong to us.” We have a great responsibility to read, to study and to meditate on God’s words to us and wring all of the understanding out of them that the Holy Spirit will enable us to take (II Timothy 2:15). We must take these truths, apply them to our hearts and then pass them on to the next generation. Let our study never be for study’s sake- “that we may do all the words of the law.” Ask God to reveal Himself to you in His Word, that you might know and obey Him. Then ask Him for the faith to trust Him with the rest.
