The Powerful One
“Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongs to God.” Psalm 62:11
It’s very difficult for me to choose my favorite part of Scripture, but I will say that I love reading the Psalms. The Psalms were Israel’s songbook, most of them written by David–shepherd, poet and king. The engaging nature of the Psalms, I believe, lies in David’s raw authenticity. By times he is angry, he is sad, he is lonely, he is joyful, he is vengeful, he is thankful. David holds nothing back!
In Psalm 62, it seems he has been betrayed. While we cannot be sure what life event he is writing about specifically, we know he feels the sting of slander and personal attacks (Psalm 62:3-4). He reminds himself that treachery and deceit will have their just ends (Psalm 62:12), and that nothing earthly has eternal value (Psalm 62:10). It is verse 11, quoted above that catches my attention, however. David reassures himself that all power belongs to God. Why does he do that? David feels powerless to defend himself from the barrage he is facing. He has no options. The enemy has the advantage, is stronger and has more resources. He has nowhere to turn. Nowhere but God. In that moment, God is not only all he has, but all he needs.
Have you ever felt like that? That you were powerless to defend yourself? That there was nothing you could do? Out of options, facing an emery far stronger than you, you are fearful of being swallowed up. Fear not–there is One who stands with you. One who has all power in His hands. One who loves you and will defend you. Call on Him today.
