The Power of Serving

This past week we once again experienced the wonderful event called the Oxford Fair. It is always crazy busy. A ton of work hours are put in by a great group of volunteers from our church. (For those of you who may read this and are not part of Moss Brook Church, our church mans the gates and parking for four days at the local fair.) It is a great opportunity for us to put a towel over our arm and serve the people in our community.
As I went through this past week a few thoughts have been bouncing around in my head about serving. Here they are. First, serving is directed towards those being served, not the ones serving. It is our responsibility to make it so those who attend the fair have the best experience possible. This seems obvious, but sometimes we can get so concerned with how we are seen as servants that we forget we are there for others. Second, good servants do not draw attention to themselves. It is our duty to make coming to the fair so easy and enjoyable that the experience puts a smile on our guests’ faces. Third, serving creates a spirit of gratitude in me. It is amusing to me that every year when I serve at the fair I become more aware of those who serve me every day and become more thankful for them.
This week as you serve others and are served by others, remind yourself: serve expecting nothing in return and without thought of being noticed.
As you are served, take notice and be thankful.
To all of you who were part of the serving team this year,
THANKS. JOB WELL DONE.
