The Perfect Word

Psalm 19:7 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.

In this simple sentence, David the psalmist makes a powerful statement about the Word of God. The Scripture, God’s law, is perfect, literally- complete, sound, even healthful. The Word of God is the authority for the Christ-follower in every aspect of life. While it may not directly address every single contingency that a person might face in life, when taken together (and obeyed), all of its principles lead to spiritual, mental and emotional health. On those difficult days we all have, the Word breathes life back into our very souls. There have been many times in my life when God has used the truth of his Word to restore my soul (Psalm 23:3), to encourage me to keep going. Not only that, but I can rely on the fact that what God desires of me never changes. His Word, David says, is sure. It is firm, lasting, established. Living in a society where everyone’s opinions and beliefs about everything are in constant flux, I know that God’s Word will last. Also, allowing the Scripture to constantly inform my beliefs and actions causes me (a man with a very simple mind) to become wise!
