The Measure of Your Days
“Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” Psalm 139:16
I have lived 17,779 days….whew–that sounds like a lot! I guess it is a lot; I’m almost 49 years old. Not to be too morbid here, but the likelihood is that I have lived more days than I have left. Not many of us live to be 98! This is one of the persistent questions of life–how long will I live? We do many things to preserve our lives–we try to eat healthy, get some exercise, stay away from dangerous activities, and take precautions to avoid illness. These things are good and wise.
Yet, we still do not have control over how long we live! It simply is not up to us to decide whether we will live to 85, or whether we will succumb to an illness or an accident at a much younger age. I ponder these things occasionally, as I am sure you do. If I don’t have control over my lifespan, who does? Answer: the One who created me has that control. Notice what David says in today’s verse: “In your book were written…the days that were formed for me.” God knows exactly how many days I will live. He has known the number since before I was even born.
How does believing that change my life? Well, I do not worry about dying before my time. I do not worry about having enough strength or wisdom to do what God wants me to do. How about you?
God knows the measure of my days. And I know He will care for me.
