The Glory of Christ
“In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” II Corinthians 4:4
Ever tried to walk around at night when the darkness is so complete, you can almost feel it? When you can’t see where you are going, you make all kinds of bad decisions, you run into things and trip over stuff. You need a light!
Everything Satan says has a purpose–to lead you and I further from the Truth. Paul calls Satan, “the god of this world.” He describes Satan’s work as blinding the minds of people. He wants people to be in the dark. Notice how Paul describes what people cannot see when spiritually blinded: “the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ.” The enemy of our souls does not want us to see the glory of Christ! He does not want us to see that Jesus Christ is all that our souls desire. He prefers to watch us stumble around in the darkness, fumbling our way through life, running into trouble and pain, and tripping over our own sinfulness and selfishness. Is that not what we do, even as believers?
Friends–God has given us a light. Re-read the verse. The light is the Gospel. The sacrificial, life-giving death and resurrection of Christ is the light that penetrates the darkness of our hearts and reveals to us the glory of Christ! The gift of the gospel is the realization of God’s glory. The purpose of this great light is to remind us that our lives will never be complete without a re-orientation, with God at the center.
