The Call

“For I have chosen him so that he will command his children and his house after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just. This is how the Lord will fulfill to Abraham what he promised him.” Genesis 18:19 CSB

I love how straightforward this verse is. Notice that I did not say that living this verse out each day would be easy. But the command and main thought of this verse are incredibly plain. This verse was God speaking about Abram after he had told him to leave all that he knew and “go to a place that God would reveal to him.” I am sure that Abram was thinking, “What am I to do after I arrive at this place?” I am sure he had lots of questions about the next steps that God would be asking him to take. But God does not reveal any of those things to Abram. Instead, we find the verse we just read, Genesis 18:19. In this short statement God outlines all that is required of Abram, and the requirements are not really about what he should do, they are all about who he should be. Notice three character qualities that need to be part of him: first, being the kind of guy who shows the “way of the Lord” to his children, second, doing “what is right,” third, “being just.” All three of these requirements are actions, but they all start in the same place. In the heart. Knowing the way of the Lord, living right and justly, all start in a heart that is yielded to God. So, God was really asking Abram to simply be obedient to the voice and heart of God.
I hope you realize that God is asking the same of us today. God is not asking us to do amazing things, He simply wants us to obey his commands and live justly each day in the mundane.
Christ follower, how well are you living out the commands of God each day of your life?
