Simplicity

Over the past few days I have been going back through a little book called Intimacy with the Almighty by Charles Swindoll. The whole book is about what it takes to develop a growing relationship with God. It is not a how-to book; Mr. Swindoll spends most of his time talking about the four decisions that we need to make in order to grow close to God.
The next four weeks I want to walk us through those decisions and challenge us to maybe adjust our lives, if needed, in those four areas.
You have probably already realize that the first decision is “simplicity.” We all have a way of complicating our lives. Most people in North American have bought the lie that more is better. We feel like we need the next new computer, watch, car, toy, house, tool or whatever thing we happen to be looking at that day. We end up on the tread mill of life; as soon as we acquire one thing we start looking for the next. What most have never realized is that the more stuff we accumulate the less simple our lives become and the more we have to worry about. making our lives hectic and chaotic. There is a direct correlation between having more and losing time for what is truly important. You see, having more not only clutters our lives with stuff, it also clutters our minds with stuff. Cluttered minds have a difficult time focusing on God. God does not want to be one of many; he wants to be the only one.
You already know what I am going to suggest, right? (Find one area of your life that you can begin to simplify.) But before I make the suggestion, I feel obligated to warn you. This is not easily accomplished. If you try this you will quickly realize that you are swimming upstream, and the current is really strong. You will have to start small and be intentional. You need to understand from the beginning, you will be misunderstood and often feel alone. But you will also find yourself drawing nearer to God.
What is that one area you could simplify?
