Review

When I was in school one of my favorite days was review day. You know, maybe before a big test or before moving on to a new concept, the teacher would take time to review to be sure you understood the important information that had been diligently imparted to you. I enjoyed this time because it was when I felt like I knew something, and it gave me a sneak peek into what the teacher was putting on the test. (I am also one of those strange people who loves to eat leftovers, which is a review of the meals we just had.)
Leaders often struggle with the idea of review. We are often in such a hurry for what is next, the next step, the next project, the next goal, that we don’t stop and review. Why should we, right? It’s the next thing that really matters, not what we just did.
Here are a few reasons why reviewing matters: 1. It helps us realize the value of our team. Stopping to review what we just accomplished reminds us of the effort and commitment of our team. 2. It gives us an opportunity to celebrate what was accomplished. 3. It helps redefine mission. Did we stick to the stated mission or did we drift? 4. It causes us to re-calibrate. What could we do differently that would cause us to be more successful? 5. It causes us to pause. The pause button is for the readjustments. Its time to shut down before you take off again.
When was your last review?
