Review

When I was in school one of my favorite days was review day. You remember, before a big test or before moving on to a new concept, the teacher would take time to review to be sure you understood the important information that had been diligently imparted to you. I enjoyed this time because it was when I felt like I knew something, and it gave me a sneak peek into what the teacher was putting on the test. (I am also one of those strange people who loves to eat leftovers, which is a review of the meals we just had; stew is the best in review.)
As humans we struggle with the idea of review. We are often in a hurry for what is next: the next step, the next project, the next goal, so we don’t stop and review. Why should we, right? It’s the next thing that really matters, not what we just did.
Here are a few reasons why reviewing matters. 1. It helps me realize the value of what I have just done. Stopping to review what I just accomplished reminds me of the success and failures of my effort. 2. It gives me an opportunity to celebrate what I have accomplished. 3. It helps redefine mission. Did I stick to the stated mission or did I drift? 4. It causes me to recalibrate. What could I do differently that would cause me to be more successful? 5. Review causes me to pause. The pause button is for the readjustments. It’s time to shut down before I take off again.
When was your last review?
