Rest
“And [Jesus] said to [his disciples], “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest awhile.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.” Mark 6:31
It had been a really hectic time. Jesus had come on the scene and immediately starting calling people to repentance (Mark 1:14). He chose the disciples (Mark 1:17). He was healing people (Mark 1, 2, 3, 5). The Gospel of Mark portrays Jesus as the Perfect Servant, and we see Him going from one opportunity to another–preaching, teaching, showing compassion and demonstrating that He was indeed the Messiah. However, He balanced his productivity with rest. Mark 1:35 tells us that Jesus stepped away for quiet reflection and prayer.
I’ve noticed that we humans have a tendency to revel in the hectic pace of life. We get caught up in all that needs to be done. We have a sense of accomplishment when we check things off of our “to-do” list. We feel needed and valuable when we come to someone’s rescue or bail them out of a difficult situation. Yes, friends, we need to be active and productive and compassionate. God makes it clear that diligence is pleasing to Him (Colossians 3:17).
But did you know that rest is also pleasing to our Maker? From the beginning, God established the pattern of work and rest. Read the story of creation. Do you think God rested on the seventh day because He was tired? No, He knew that when we created a capable, gifted, determined human race that many of us would push too hard and neglect the balance He intended. Work hard at all God has given you to do, but be sure to rest too.
