Repeat, Repeat, Repeat

Malcom Gladwell in his book Outliers says that you become proficient at something only after you have put in 10,000 hours at it. This fact is highly debated in other studies. But one element goes to the top of every study, and that is “deliberate practice.” It is by doing things over and over again that we get good at them. The same principle is true for doing the little things. If we are willing to practice them daily, if we are willing to put in the time and effort necessary, we can master the little things and they become part of us. In sports or music this is called muscle memory–repeatedly doing drills so that you no longer need to think about the process, you just do it. The same is true for the little things; what you do repeatedly, you become. This is the hard work. This means getting up every day and making the choice to do the right things. It means that when others are choosing to take the easy road you refuse and do the work. It means you begin to define your success by how well you do the little things, not by what people think of you. The more you work at this, the longer you practice, the more you will become defined by habits you have developed, and the better you will be at leading others.

What do you need to keep repeating? Or what do you need to start repeating?
