Reflection

“As water reflects the face, so the heart reflects the person.”
Proverbs 27:19 CSB

This verse we read this morning reminds me of something I was told as a teen, “The true character of a person is seen when you watch them go a long time in one direction.” Calm water will always reflect what is directly above it; it is just the nature of the properties of water. The same thing can be said about our hearts. It is the nature of our hearts to reflect our true character. Oh, we might be able to hide what is in our hearts for a short time, we may be able to fool some people who are not around us much, but those who spend time around us each day will really see the nature of our heart. So, what has your heart been saying about you? If you were to ask the people who live life with you each day, how would they say your heart is reflecting your character? What would they say motivates you? How would they describe your character qualities? Now for the tough question: is that what you would want them to say about you? If it is not, then you are in for some tough work. The only way that I am aware of to have a heart change is by the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in us. It is only when we yield our will to His that our hearts and character can be changed. The Apostle Paul in Galatians said it best, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22). These heart qualities will only become evident in us though the presence of the Holy Spirit in us.
Have you been trying to produce these character qualities on your own? Why not ask the Holy Spirit to help you and allow him to do his work in you. Then your heart will begin to reflect the heart of God in you.
