Pursue Peace
“If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” Romans 12:18
At some point, I think everyone has had to deal with a contentious relationship. In fact, as soon as you read that sentence, someone’s name might have popped into your head! Differences of opinion at work or at home regarding the most effective way to get things done, or straight-up personality conflicts can wreak havoc. They often leave us frustrated and even willing to sever the relationship to avoid the difficulty.
Like so many areas of life, God calls us to live a different way when it comes to those kinds of situations. When read in Greek, the original language of the New Testament, our verse today carries with it the idea of doing everything in your power to bring peace to a relationship. The story is told of one of Abraham Lincoln’s clients (when he was a young attorney) who wanted to bring a lawsuit against a man who owed him $2.50. The defendant was extremely poor and Lincoln tried to talk his client out of the action. Realizing he would not be dissuaded, Lincoln charged his client a legal fee of $10, and gave the defendant $5–who then willingly confessed to the debt and paid the $2.50! Even more amazing than Lincoln’s genius was the fact that his client was perfectly content with the resolution!
Friends–many in our world today want to be angry. They thrive on contention, debate and strife. As Christ followers, however, we should make every effort to resolve differences and to talk through disagreements. Look at your life. Is there someone you need to reach out to today? Is it in your power to bring peace to the relationship? Pursue peace with all.
