Procrastination – Leader Killer
Procrastination – to delay, stall or postpone action
I really should write this blog, but I’ll have time later. I should get up and exercise…just five more minutes in bed. I should send that note, make that call, plan that project, play with my kids, change my eating habits, start a budget, have a consistent time with God, go on a date with my spouse, and the list goes on and on. There are so many things that are important that we continue to put off and end up not doing at all because we allow the unimportant to rule. Procrastination.
I have spent a great deal of time thinking about the “why” behind procrastination and have realized there are a number of reasons that are given to explain the “why.” Can I be so bold as to say that they are just that, “excuses”? We are so good at not taking the blame for our inability to control ourselves. It is always someone else’s problem. I don’t have time. I can’t. When really there are two simple factors at play. First, laziness; I just don’t want to put in the effort to make it happen. The cost to my own selfishness is too great. Second, I lack the conviction that what I am doing really matters. If I am truly convinced that what I should be doing will have an effect on my future and the future of those closest to me, I will do whatever it takes to make it happen.
If you have been finding yourself procrastinating lately, take a moment to do a heart check and see what is driving it. Then confess the issue and move on. Don’t get stuck there. Do it now!
