Perfection
“The Rock, His work is perfect, for all His ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is He.” Deuteronomy 32:4
Moses’ long and distinguished career as the leader of the nation of Israel was coming to a close. He had just spent the entire book of Deuteronomy reviewing God’s law for the people. There was so much to remember! Interestingly, Moses decides to end his challenge with a song. He will go on to sing about some of the things that God had done for the nation of Israel, but he chooses to begin the song by focusing on God’s character. Notice all of His attributes that are mentioned: His unchangingness (The Rock), His perfect purpose (His work is perfect), His justice, His faithfulness, His holiness (without iniquity), His justice again and His holiness again.
Why does Moses emphasize God’s character? He does so because everything that God does originates in who He is. Everything God does is consistent, perfect, just, faithful and holy because He is those things. Always. We must understand the character of God because it helps us properly interpret the things that happen in our lives. Often difficult things happen, and we are prone to blame God or question His love for us. It is in those times that we must remember that our God is just, holy and perfect. That His love never fails. That His faithfulness and mercy are new in our lives every morning. Moses knew that Israel had some difficult times ahead, and that they would need to rest in God’s unchanging character. You may not know why everything happens the way it does in your life, but you can know that God always has your best in mind.
