Open My Eyes
Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.
Psalm 119:18
The Bible, being God’s Word, is a treasure trove of truth and principles for living a life
pleasing to Him. Yet, often when we sit down to read it, we have trouble either
discerning what the Scripture is saying, or difficulty figuring out how it applies to our
lives. I believe one of the reasons for that is our tendency to forget the request found in
this verse. Notice David’s simple prayer- “Father, please open my eyes.” The fact is
that despite our desire to know what God is saying to us, we often miss it because our
eyes are closed! Sometimes they are closed because of unconfessed sin in our hearts.
Sometimes they are closed because of a disagreement or a grudge against another
person. Sometimes they are closed because of doubt, fear, worry or anxiety. Our eyes
are often closed to God’s truth because we are sinners. Because our attention is
focused on ourselves, our needs, our desires, our concerns. The Psalmist at once
encourages us and challenges us: our eyes need to be opened (taken off of ourselves)
so that we can see the wonderful things God has for us! My friends, do not doubt that
when our hearts are focused on Him, and our eyes are open to His truth, that God has
much that He wants to say to us. And it is always for our good. Begin your next time in
God’s Word this way. “Father, please open my eyes to Your truth. I want to hear the
wonderful, life changing things You have for me.”
