No More Guilt

“And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with (Christ), having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.” Colossians 2:13-14

A lot of people are being made to feel guilty about many things these days. And guilt never makes an appearance in our lives without bringing along its ugly cousin, shame. While there is no doubt that we’re all sinners, and we all feel guilt about our sin, God does not intend for His people to live under this kind of burden. In fact, Paul makes it very clear in Colossians 2, that the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ gives us complete forgiveness for our sin and wonderful freedom from guilt! Notice four things that the Father did through Jesus to obliterate our guilt and shame:

1) He gives us life. We’re dead because of what we’ve done and alive because of what He’s done!
2) He forgives our sin. The word forgiveness implies freedom. The prophet Micah says that God casts our sin into the deepest sea. It has been paid for by the blood of Christ.
3) He cancels our debt. The wording here is legal in nature–our sin is on the record! It’s real, it’s public, it’s condemning. Yet because of Jesus’ death–it is wiped out!
4) He nails our sin to the cross. The Father states, “The penalty of sin must be paid.” The Son states, “There is only One who can do it–Me.”

There is no more guilt for those who are in Christ Jesus. Leave that burden and your shame at the cross. Your debt has been paid.
