Morning Person
“O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.” Psalm 5:3
I was a typical teenager. My preference was to stay up late and sleep in! I wrote essays at night by the light of my desk lamp, then abused my alarm clock when it rudely reminded me I had to get up for school. Summertime only increased my desire to sleep in! Fortunately, my summer job was haying for Tim’s father, who was a dairy farmer. The sun had to burn off the dew and dry out the hay, so rarely did we start before 9 or 10 o’clock. I’ve grown out of that for the most part, but my alarm does still shock me sometimes!
King David was a morning person. Even as a teenager, he got up early to get started on the day (I Samuel 17:20). This translated into his spiritual life as well. Our verse today tells us that David spent time in the morning with God. That was when he prayed (v.2). Notice that he “prepared a sacrifice” for God in the morning. This phrase refers to his prayer as well. The first thing David did before he started the day, was to direct his attention to God. In so doing, he was submitting himself to God. He was offering himself, his time and his energy to whatever He had in store.
I don’t know what your habit is for personal time in God’s Word and prayer. I have learned over the years that it is important for me to start my day by orienting my heart and mind toward God before I do anything else. I challenge you to join me in becoming a morning person!
