Masterpiece
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10
So you have trusted Christ, and you want to live for Him. The problem is, there are so many times that you struggle to do what is right. Well, you are not alone! Even the apostle Paul wrestled with consistency (Romans 7:18-19).
At the end of his explanation of God’s grace to us in salvation, Paul gives us some insight into God’s subsequent plans for us in the verse above. “We (Christ followers) are (God’s) workmanship.” The word workmanship is sometimes translated “masterpiece,” and was often used in the Greek language to refer to art. The implication of this word is the time and effort required to produce such a work of art and the ultimate value of it once finished. Michelangelo spent 4 years lying on his back on scaffolding to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Leonardo DaVinci worked on the Mona Lisa for four years, then came back to it and spent another 3 years working on it until his death. Gutzon Borglund invested 14 years of his life (with 400 assistants) to create Mt. Rushmore!
Believer–you are far more precious to Jesus Christ than any painting or sculpture. And He will use everything–every moment, every day, every event of your entire life in order to shape you into what He wants you to be! Do not be discouraged as you struggle to grow. Rather, commit yourself to the Savior’s care and watch for His guidance (Proverbs 3:5-6). Trust Him moment by moment for strength (II Corinthians 12:9-10). And know that He has a wonderful plan for you! (II Peter 1:3).
