Margin – So What?

Ok, I have a little margin in my life now, so what? I don’t notice that big of a change; what’s the big deal? This is where it gets a bit tricky; margin really only becomes apparent when we get pushed or an emergency happens. That is the point of margin. It is a lot like your emergency fund in budgeting. Your emergency fund is there to take the pressure off when finances get tight because of something unexpected. It is easy to look at that $10,000 in the emergency fund and think “That is just sitting there doing nothing; I could go do something fun with it,” and that is tempting. But the moment I do I just allowed the pressure of the unknown to rule again. The same is true with margin. Margin is making room for the unexpected and the readjustments you will need to make. You only know how much you really need it, when you need it.

It is easy to get tricked into filling up your margin because the pressure is off and you don’t feel overwhelmed. Don’t. Continue to work on your margin; the benefits will show up soon.
