Looks Soooo Good!

What looks good to you? Is it food, a new car, clothing, new furniture, or maybe it is an incredible view in nature. Each of us has different tastes and desires which means that different things look good to each of us. There is nothing strange about that statement, nor does that thought seem bad when taken at face value. The struggle comes when something that looks good takes control of us and causes us to do things and act in ways that are inappropriate and sinful. Let me show you what I mean from Genesis chapter 3. “The woman saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it” Genesis 3:6 CSB. In this verse we jump into the end of a conversation happening between Eve and the serpent. The serpent (Satan) is tempting Eve to disobey God, and he has her complete attention. What he is offering her has been forbidden by God, yet it looks so good and seems so harmless. How could God withhold something so good from her? How could something that seems so good and delightful be wrong? Eve is not alone in this struggle of thoughts. We all have been in the same place; maybe you are now. There is a choice before you that on its face seems harmless and would feel good right now. But if you stop and think about it, you realize that the long term effects of giving in would be devastating. Adam and Eve’s decision to give in was devastating for all mankind; “Because of one man’s sin, death passed onto all mankind for all have sinned.” We all have been separated from God because of one man’s sin. Now, you maybe thinking, “My decision won’t have an effect on all of humanity.” That is probably true, but it will have an effect on you and those who are close to you. The consequences of our sin are felt by those closest to us. Our decisions are either drawing people to God or pushing them away from God; they are never static.
What looks good to you? If you give in to it, will it draw you and others to God or push them away from him? Be careful what choices you make today; they all have consequences.
