Living Water
“He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.” Psalm 1:3
There are two large windows in my office. As I write, they are both wide open and I hear the sound of a gentle rain falling outside. We haven’t had a good steady rain for a couple of weeks, and I imagine that I can hear the grass and plants and trees greedily drinking it in through their roots. It is amazing to think of this wonderful ecosystem that God has designed whereby so many living organisms can take something as simple as water and fuel the processes that give life.
In Psalm 1, David likens the godly person to a tree. Note its location–by a stream of water, which allows the tree to produce timely fruit, to flourish and to grow. How vital that life-giving water. Without it, the tree will cease production, wither and die. We have some new plants outside our office. Because we know the rain is sporadic, we’ve stretched out hoses and connected sprinklers on timers. This way, not a day goes by without the ground around the plants being saturated with water.
You are like that tree! God intends for you to grow, to produce fruit and to display His glory. But you cannot do that without the living water of God’s Word. You need a daily intake of spiritual Truth, or you will wither. What are you doing every day to ensure you have what you need? Set aside time to open your Bible before your day starts. Ask God to help you understand and apply it. Drink in its life-giving wisdom and strength.
