“Teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts.”
Psalms 90:12 CSB
I was spending a little time thinking about this verse and this thought came to me:
“Don’t let yesterday define you or tomorrow paralyze you.”
I think the verse is telling us that we should be aware enough of our days that we don’t waste them, and we also learn from each event they produce. Often we allow the events of yesterday to decide our success or failure today. Let me explain. Let’s say you are trying to lose weight or exercise regularly, and you realize that over the past few days you have failed miserably. Most people’s thought process then becomes, “See, I can’t do it; I might as well not even try. This is just who I am.” They allow what happened yesterday to stop them from trying tomorrow. The verse in Psalms is telling us to learn from each day so that we grow in wisdom and become who we should be. I love the truth that we are given in Lamentations, “Your mercies are new every morning, great is your faithfulness.” As Christ-followers we get to start each day as a new beginning. God in his unfailing love offers us a fresh start with him every hour of every day. He wants us to keep coming to him, resting in him, trusting him, and relying on him. When we do this we are made into his image, becoming more and more mature in love and faith. Eventually we will look back on our life and realize we are not the person we used to be. We have become the person God intended us to be.
Let me end with this question: how have you been allowing your days to define you?
