Leading With Direction
One of my favorite things to do in the summer is for the kids, Pam and I to jump in the van and head for somewhere we have never been. Explore, go wherever we feel like, stop and see interesting things, eat at a new local restaurant, enjoy each other’s company. I have thought about taking others with us, but have quickly realized how difficult that could be; the more people you have the more directions you would need to go. The more ideas of what would be interesting, the harder it would be for everyone to enjoy the experience.
I think sometimes we try to lead like I take summer outings: going here and there because it looks interesting, looking for something new and different and asking others to follow us in our little excursion through life. Summer outings are great for relaxing and hanging out with someone you love, but they are not a great way to lead people. Your team needs to know where you are going; they need to know where they are supposed to end up and what is to be completed when they reach their destination. How clearly are you leading your team? Are they clear on the what is expected? Do they know how long the task should take? Are you leading them somewhere, or are you on a summer outing?
