Know & Do
“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” II Peter 3:18
In regard to your physical body, balance is incredibly important. Did you know that it requires all of your muscles from your gluteus maximus down to the tendons in your big toe to keep you from toppling over while standing? (Fun fact–the technical name for the big toe is hallux. You’re welcome.) If you are wearing a heavy backpack, your brain knows to lean forward to maintain balance. What an incredible body God has designed for us!
Spiritual balance is also vital. Some people have a tendency to be learners, readers, students. They love to gather information, to think, to ponder, to analyze. Yet sometimes putting all that knowledge into action is slow to happen. Others would say, “I’m a doer! I don’t worry about all the details–just let me at it! Let’s get this done!” The reality is that neither of these positions is desirable. The learner needs to put his knowledge into practice and the doer needs to make sure he knows what is right and what truly needs to be done. Peter challenges us to “grow in grace and knowledge.” Knowledge in this context is Truth, doctrine. What does the Bible say? We cannot possibly know what we called to do unless we study and know the Word. Grace in this context is doing. It is the interaction of the day with our families, friends, and neighbors. Grace is living out what we know.
Friend–how’s your balance? Consider which way you tend to lean–toward knowing or doing? Address the deficiency of your soul. Be a “knower” and a “doer.”
