Keep Going!

“As for you, brothers, do not grow weary in doing good.” II Thessalonians 3:13

Have you ever noticed that doing the right thing gets increasingly difficult as time goes on? As I’ve gotten older, it’s become more noticeable when I don’t eat like I should. I can’t get away with eating whatever I want like I did when I was 25. I’ve had spurts when I’ve eaten carefully, but after a while, I miss my pizza and ice cream! The other day, I had dinner with a friend in my age bracket who has done very well with his diet, and he challenged me to get back on track. Hearing him talk about how much better he feels was inspiring!

The church at Thessalonica was growing, loving, serving (II Thessalonians 1:3). Paul even used them as examples for other churches who were struggling! But it was a tough road. They were tired. They were being persecuted for their faith (1:4). So Paul challenged them to keep going, to not give up–to keep growing and loving and serving. What was critical for them in the beginning was still important.

This brings two thoughts to my mind. First of all, I’m reminded of how important it is for us to be consistent in our walk with God and our service for Him. It is relatively easy to start out strong, get excited and tell everyone we know what God has done for us. But then, the excitement wears off and we get tired. Secondly, I’m reminded that we have a responsibility to encourage each other to continue in what God has given us to do. Everyone gets tired, everyone gets discouraged! Christ follower–keep going. In time, you will reap your reward (Galatians 6:9).
