John’s First Glimpse of Heaven
“Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”
Revelation 4:8b
Heaven. The very word conjures up so many images in our heads. Some of us instantly think of chubby little angels playing harps, or people floating on clouds, or maybe kids running down streets of gold. When we ask questions about heaven, we typically ask, “How big will our mansions be?” or “How old will we be?” or “Can I ask God all the questions I’ve been wondering about?” Our curiosity is natural. There is so much the Bible does not tell us about what heaven will be like. The book of Revelation centers on what God revealed to John about heaven and future events. Chapter 4 opens with John telling us that the “door” to heaven was standing open! What do you think John did? He was curious too! He stepped in, and the very first thing he saw was a throne, the throne of God. Surrounding the throne were four incredible, unbelievable creatures. Interestingly, they were not asking any questions. They were not wondering about mansions or golden streets or if they would ever get bored being in one place for all of eternity. What they were doing was worshiping. They were worshiping the Almighty God. “Holy, holy, holy” they said. He is eternal. He is mighty. Simultaneously, twenty four elders were singing their own song. Theirs focused not on God’s holiness, but His worthiness to receive glory and honor. My friends- I have so many questions about heaven, but I have a feeling most (if not all) of them will fade completely away when I stand before the most holy and most worthy God of the universe. To Him be glory.
