It’s Logical

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” Romans 12:1

I’m not sure how your brain works, but mine runs on logic–my logic! When you tell me something you want us to do together, I’m going to need to know why–which can really kill the fun of the moment sometimes! I do try to be more spontaneous, but it’s a lot of work!

When Paul challenges us to move from belief to conviction (see last week’s blog), he says our response should be to offer ourselves to God. He calls us to lay it all on the line for the glory of God, the sake of the Gospel, the good of others. To which we ask, “Why?” Why would we willingly pay such a price as setting aside our own desires, hopes and dreams to serve God and care about others? Only one reason–the mercy of God. If you have moved from belief to conviction, then Paul says that this sacrifice is our “spiritual worship.” The word that the ESV translates “spiritual” is translated differently in every English version of the Bible. Let me give you the original Greek word and see if you recognize it–LOGIKOS. Look familiar? Yes, “logical.” It is logical for us to say no to the things the world says yes to. It is logical for us to separate ourselves from sinful practices, to love our spouses differently, to raise our children differently, to spend our money differently, to do our jobs differently.
