It Was Good

I have been re-reading the book of Genesis for an upcoming series of messages. In the first two chapters I noticed once again the repetition of the phrase “It was good” or “It was very good.” As God created all of what we know as the universe and the world we live in, he did it to his standard of perfection. Everything that he created he would finish and say, “And it was very good.” But when he got to the man that he created, he changed his pronouncement. If we look at Genesis 2:18 we read, “Then the Lord God said, ‘it is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper (completer) who is just right for him.’” When God created man he had woman in mind. Think about that for a minute. God was not standing before Adam realizing for the first time that he had mis-calculated in his creation and that he had somehow failed when he made Adam. No, God knew that in order for the needs of Adam to be met, he would need someone like him, someone created from him and for him. The next few verses tell us that God caused man to sleep deeply as God performed the first surgery, and from that surgery God created a completer for Adam, a woman, Eve. (Notice he did not create another man.) Then verse 23 describes their relationship this way, “The man is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.” The relationship between a man and a woman is a completing relationship. In other words we need each other and we make each other better.
I am not sure where you are in your relationship with your spouse. But remember this, God in his wisdom created your spouse for you; you were meant to be together. You are better when you are working together than when you are alone. Make room for each other, listen to each other, learn from each other. I think you will be surprised by who you become when you learn to be completed by your spouse!
