Hurry Much?
“Hurry is the great enemy of spiritual life in our day. You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life.” Dallas Willard
This quote reminds me of one of my favorite country songs by Alabama, “I’m in a hurry to get things done, oh, I rush and rush till life’s no fun. All I really have to do is live and die, but I’m in a hurry and don’t know why.”
I think that hurry is one of Satan’s greatest weapons. It slips in so innocently; it always seems important to do more, to help more people, to offer more opportunities to our children, to broaden our horizons. Often we are in a hurry to do things that offer no value to us or anyone else. We hurry to waste time.
Then the day comes when you start to feel exhausted, and things that used to be small tasks have become mountains that seem too big for you. You look around and wonder why you are in such a hurry. Are these things really all that important? They must be, or I wouldn’t have started doing them. Right!!
Here is the problem with being in a hurry. There is no time to listen for or hear from God. How often do you have time or take time to just stop and listen to your soul? When was the last time you were still with your thoughts and invited the Holy Spirit to speak into them? When was the last time you lingered at a meal with your family, or stopped to explore something new in your yard or town? When was the last time you followed a butterfly to see where it was going? In our world we often see these things as a waste of time, when really they are good for our souls.
What would it take to reduce your hurry?
