Humility
Deuteronomy 34:10 “And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face.”
The book of Deuteronomy closes with this incredible epitaph–there has never been another leader in Israel’s history like Moses. He knew God intimately and was used in amazing ways to deliver and care for His people (34:11-12). When I read verses like this one, I immediately ask myself, “What was the difference in Moses’ life? What set him apart from so many others who loved God?” I think the answer is found in the book of Numbers: “Now the man Moses was very meek, more than all of the people on the face of the earth” (Num.12:3). In my mind, this is an even more amazing statement than the one from Deuteronomy! There was no one on earth as humble as Moses! I believe there is a direct correlation between Moses’ humility and his powerful leadership. He humbled himself before God and others, and God infused him with wisdom, power and courage to lead and serve well.
Often, in our own lives, we lament our lack of gift or ability or impact. We wonder if things were different, or if we were different, if we could do more, accomplish more for God. Here’s the reality: God is looking for humble servants, who come to Him with open hands, ready & willing to receive what He gives them to use for His glory. Let’s stop looking at who we are, and humble ourselves to the point where we can see who God is. That will be the difference in our service for Him.
