How to Live a Holy Life

Last week we talked about the fact that God’s will for every Christ-follower is that they be holy. If you are like me then you immediately ask the question, “How do I do that?” “What are the steps I need to take to become holy?” And, “Is it even possible?” I think it is only fair to remind us that we will only become completely holy when we get to heaven. But that doesn’t mean that we don’t need to be working toward the goal of holiness. Also, God has not left us without any tools or the ability to work toward holiness and becoming more like him.
I have been slowly rereading the Psalms lately and the last week have been in Psalm 119. There are a number of verses in this chapter that help us in our journey to holiness; let me just remind us of a few of them. First, “How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping your word” Psalms 119:9 CSB. If we want to live in purity we must know the word of God. This doesn’t happen just by going to church on Sunday; I must read and study the word of God regularly for myself. Second, “I have sought you with all my heart; don’t let me wander from your commands” Psalms 119:10. Seek God with all of my heart, that means being singular in my pursuit of God. God must be first always. Then lastly, “I have treasured your word in my heart so that I may not sin against you” Psalms 119:11 CSB. We need to put the effort into memorizing the word of God and applying it to our daily living.
It is in keeping the commands of God that we are able to live a holy, God-honoring life. How much time and effort have you been putting in to sinking the Word of God deep into your heat and life? Remember, becoming holy starts and ends with God.
