He Is Able

“By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.” Psalm 33:6

While I was in college and for a few years when we were planting Moss Brook Church, I worked as a carpenter. I enjoyed it- both the work and the sense of accomplishment when a project was completed. Not too long ago, Tim and I built a house for some friends. It was a nice house, but not overly large- just an average-sized home for a family. It took about six months of work from foundation to finishes, and it looked pretty good when we were done! But as I come to the verse we are considering today, I am reminded of how feeble my “impressive” efforts really are. God made the “heavens” by simply speaking. I’m told that the Milky Way galaxy is 180,000 light years wide; that is, if you traveled 186,000 miles per second, it would take you 180,000 years to get from one side to the other! With another simple word, God created the estimated 400 billion stars that fill that galaxy. The power of God is absolutely stunning when we take the time to pause from our busy lives and consider it. When I do just that, I am left with two thoughts. The first: my abilities are not all that amazing in light of His. The second: if God can do these things by the sound of His voice, why do I continually doubt His ability to intervene in the affairs and circumstances of my life? Consider your own life. Are you desperate to solve your own problems, or are you desperately calling out to the mighty God of creation to do what only He can do?
