Get to Work!
“And Moses called Bezalel and Oholiab and every craftsman in whose mind the Lord had put skill, everyone whose heart stirred him up to come to do the work.” Exodus 36:2
My first job was haying on the dairy farm owned by the small Bible college where I grew up. I worked with my brother and Tim for Tim’s dad and we got paid the princely sum of $1 per hour. We thought we were rolling in the dough! I remember the morning of July 7, 1983– my 13th birthday. It was a gorgeous day and my first thought was, “What’s wrong with this picture? I have to work on my birthday?” Welcome to the real world, kid!
Work is a part of life. It has been since the beginning (Genesis 2:15). Sweating for a living was born out of the curse of sin (Genesis 3:19), but work is not all bad. God can be glorified in it. In today’s verse, Moses had received God’s instruction to build the tabernacle–a mobile place of worship for the Israelites to use as they traveled through the wilderness. It was an intricate project, with many components that were to be completed in a very specific fashion. As Moses called the people to work, we see that these men had specific skills that God had given them. Later, we see that they completed the project exactly as God had instructed them (Exodus 39:42).
I know that not everyone has a job they love. Be thankful you have a job. Be thankful for every skill you have. Whatever God has put in front of you to do today, do it to the best of your ability, do it for God’s glory, and be thankful (Colossians 3:17).
