Exposed

Have you ever been walking along in the winter and all of the sudden you step on a little ice that is hidden under the snow, your foot shots out from under you, and down you go in a pile? What is your first reaction? Even before we check to see if all of our body parts are in the right place and not broken, most of us will immediately look around to see if anyone saw us fall. I am not sure why it matters so much to us, but we seem to think our falling shows weakness somehow, and we don’t want our falling weakness to be exposed.
I was reading Hebrews 4 and this verse jumped off the page at me. “For the word of God is alive and powerful… It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable” Hebrews 4:12-13 NLT. We seem to spend a lot of energy trying to hide our shortcomings and failures, trying to be or look like we are someone we are not. These verses quickly remind us that we can try as hard as we would like to hide but the Word of God exposes everything about us. God’s Word is a giant magnifying glass that shows what is really going inside of our hearts. Now the point of the Bible exposing us is not to make us feel condemned or unloved; the point is to correct us and help us become who God intended us to be.
The questions I have been asking myself this week are “Am I spending enough time in the Word of God so the Spirit can expose what is really going on inside of me? And “How am I changing what He has shown me?” These might be good questions for you to ask yourself this week as well.
