Examine Yourself!
2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test
yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—
unless indeed you fail to meet the test!
Is it possible that people could wrongly assume that they are believers in Jesus Christ?
To go through life thinking that they are right with God, only find out one day that they
are not? Indeed, it is possible. Jesus warned of this (Matthew 7:21). Paul confirms it.
He challenges us to “examine” and “test ourselves.” My greatest concern as a pastor
is to see Christ followers mature in their faith. However, in order to do that, they must
first be “in the faith,” genuinely saved by the blood of Christ. How do we test
ourselves? What are we looking for? I might suggest that these evidences are not
those commonly lauded as the marks of saving faith–praying a prayer, being baptized,
or attending church, to name a few. While these things are good and right, a guarantee
of true faith they are not. James tells us that even demons believe the facts of the
Gospel (James 2:19). So what are the true tests of faith? First, saving faith is marked by
a genuine sorrow for sin. I realize my own sinfulness, and my need of a Savior (I John 1:7-10).
Secondly, there is a desire for righteousness. “Blessed are those who hunger
and thirst” for it, Jesus said (Matthew 5:6). Sanctification (progression in holiness) is
attractive to those who have been saved. Thirdly, true faith is marked by a willingness
to obey God. Once again, quoting Jesus, “If you love Me, keep My
commandments.” (John 14:15). Friends–test yourself. Let’s not simply know the facts
of the Gospel, but respond to them in faith!
