Everything We Need

“His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us to His own glory and excellence.” II Peter 1:3

We finally decided to take the plunge. It was time to buy a flat screen TV. We had a 19” tube TV that was on its last legs, and I had found a nice 32” LCD. Wow! What a difference that was going to make for Red Sox games and movies. We saved up the money, brought it home and 5 seconds after I got it plugged in, everyone started selling the next new thing- LED TVs. Unbelievable! It is impossible to “have it all!” Just when you get caught up, somebody invents something better. The good news for us as Christ followers is that we can jump off the materialistic hamster wheel our culture is on. We don’t need to be driven by what we don’t have. Christ has given us everything we need to live life in a godly manner. Our verse tells us that we access this supply by knowing Him. Knowledge of Christ comes through the Scripture. As we come to know Him, and understand all that He promises us (v.4), our perspective begins to change. Instead of noticing all that we lack materially, we see that true fulfillment comes only as we deepen our relationship with Christ and allow Him to develop in us the kind of character that resembles His. As we continue to walk with Him, we find peace and satisfaction. One day, we will enter His kingdom “rich” for having oriented our lives to His purposes instead of our own (v.11). By the way, 10+ years later- that old LCD is still working just fine.
