Every Morning Marks a New Day
Lamentations 3:22-23 “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
As a typical teenager, I don’t recall ever enjoying getting up early. Life didn’t begin until at least 8 or 9 am. These days, however, I find myself waking up earlier and earlier. My precious 19 year old son says it’s because I am an old man! I guess I am getting older, and with it, I am beginning to enjoy the early morning. As my eyes opened a few minutes before 6am today, I first felt the cool breeze on my face from the open window nearby. I then heard several different varieties of birds calling out their morning news. I saw the sun peaking through the blinds. Morning. A new day from our gracious God. And with it, His infinite love, His unfailing compassion and His great faithfulness. Jeremiah was mired in the sin and despair of the wretchedness of Israel when the Holy Spirit inspired him to write these words. God was reminding him (and us, 2600 years later!) that regardless of the trials of the day, His people are not overtaken. The phrase “steadfast love” actually means “covenant loyalty.” God made a covenant with Israel that He would always care for them. He later made a new covenant with us through the blood of Jesus Christ. No matter what happens in any given day of our lives, each morning brings a fresh supply of God’s loyalty to us and His love for us. We will never be consumed when our hope, our strength and our confidence is in almighty God.
