Don’t Let Anyone Stand Alone

“And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” Ecclesiastes 4:12

Have you ever noticed that the strongest ropes or strings or cords are braided? Common household string, any kind of rope, even the charger cord I use for my phone is braided. Somewhere along the line, someone realized that weaving several small strands together vastly increased the strength of the whole!

I think I am going to credit Solomon–the wisest man who ever lived (I Kings 4:30)–with this discovery! The interesting thing to me is that Solomon was wise enough to know that the principle also applied to human relationships. We are not wired to live life in isolation. God designed us to be interconnected with one another. This truth has certainly been highlighted during the Covid-19 pandemic. While untold amounts of time and people and dollars are being directed to keeping us apart from each other in order to preserve our physical well-being, our emotional and spiritual well-being are being pummeled by lack of contact and interaction.

Friends–we were not made to live like this! We need each other. For those of us who are married and have children, perhaps we have not felt this as sharply. In some ways, we have enjoyed more time together than our busy schedules typically allow. But for our brothers and sisters who are single, have no children, or live alone, I would imagine this has been doubly difficult.

Take a moment today and reach out to someone. If you are able, make a point to see them face to face. At the very least, make a phone call. Don’t text, don’t email. We need community.
