Cost of Leadership

Before you make the decision to do anything in life, it is a good idea to stop and count the cost of the decision. Look back over the past few years and think about how many decisions you would have made differently now that you know the true cost. Maybe it is a relationship you are in, a job you took, a major purchase you made, or maybe it is a missed opportunity because of a wrong decision. There is a cost to everything that we do each day. This concept is even more noticeable in leadership.
If you are really going to lead well and use your leadership ability to make a difference you need to always be mindful of the cost. You may be asking what I mean about the cost of leadership. Here are a few examples: when you lead others you are giving up some parts of your freedom, and you are taking on the responsibility for others, for their well-being and possibly part of their livelihood. None of this is bad; it is just a cost. For some leaders it is not until they are involved in leading that they count the cost and don’t like what they find. So my question for you is, “Have you stopped and counted the cost?” Are you willing to pay the price to be a good leader? If your answer is a weak “Yes” or a resounding “No!” then don’t lead. Just help out. You will be happier and so will everyone else.
