Contentment

“Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have.”
Philippians 4:11 NLT

Contentment – a state of happiness and satisfaction.
Have you noticed lately how unhappy and discontent the people around you are? Maybe you have noticed this about yourself. We seem to be always wanting more stuff, more adventures, more money, and greater comforts. When you think about how privileged we are in this country, it is amazing the level of discontentment that is evident. One would think that those who have so much would be content. This lack of contentment is showing us that happiness and contentment are not tied to the things we have nor the ease of our lives. If things and comfort don’t bring contentment, then what does?
God, through the apostle Paul, gives us some insight into this question. Paul tell us in Philippians 4:12-13 “…I have learned the secret of being content…whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” His secret was not a 5 step program or thinking positively, nor was it in a small amount or large amount of stuff. His contentment was completely wrapped up in the person of Christ. True contentment can only be found in having true meaning for life. That meaning can only be found in the originator and sustainer of life, Christ.
I know it almost sounds too simplistic; I know it seems that we should have to work hard for and do many complicated things to achieve contentment. The prophet Isaiah said it this way, “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” If you are longing for happiness and contentment in your life, then let Christ be the Lord and master of your life, and you will discover what you have been looking for. It won’t make life easy, but you will definitely find contentment.
