Consistency

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1

How important is consistency? Well, the human heart beats 100,000 times per day, 2.5 billion times in a life span, but if it stops for just two minutes, we will die. Consistency matters in every area. We want our car to start every time, our favorite food to taste the same every time.

The problem is–life isn’t consistent. Daily, there are new challenges and circumstances that need to be dealt with. So how can we be consistent in a world that is not? I want to suggest to you that confidence in our God will lead to consistency in our lives. Hebrews 11:6 says that it is impossible to please God in our lives without faith. But what is faith? Faith is the assurance (the steadiness, the confidence) that what we hope for will happen. It is the conviction (the proof, the persuasion) that what we cannot see does indeed exist. But how can we have that kind of confidence in God?

While there is no doubt this is a daily struggle and a lifetime journey, it is possible to have complete confidence in God. We begin to do that the same way we gain confidence in our other relationships–we study that person’s track record. Are they dependable? Are they reliable? Do they care about me? When we look at God, we see that He has never failed, He has never been unreliable, and Jesus’ death on the cross tells me that He loves me infinitely. Friend, have confidence that God will one day bring us into His presence for eternity. Let that confidence inspire you to live consistently, trusting Him for the strength you need every day.
