Confidence

“But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.” Psalm 3:3

Most of you have likely felt at some point in your life that someone had it in for you. It’s not a good feeling to have every decision you make challenged, every thing you say misinterpreted, to hear whispers about your character. When this takes place, it is a small step to wondering if the whole world is against you.

King David didn’t have to imagine it–he was in it. His own son, Absalom, was plotting his father’s death in order to take over the throne (II Samuel 15). Absalom turned people against his father, and built a group of warriors and leaders to facilitate his takeover. David mourns the fact that his enemies are many, and that his options are limited (Psalm 3:1-2). But despite the overwhelming odds, he was confident. Why? Because he was a superior military strategist? Because he had a great army? Because he had the wealth to wait it out? No–David was confident because the Lord was His shield, His shelter in the storm. He knew that God had lifted him out of the humble life of a shepherd and that He could certainly lift him out of this. Such was David’s confidence in the Lord’s protection, that he was able to sleep peacefully (Psalm 3:5).

What’s happening in your life? What barriers stand in your way? A co-worker? An addiction? A broken marriage? An illness? A difficult child? The world will tell you to be your own hero. I can tell you that will not work. Turn to God, submit yourself to His Truth, His plan for living, and have confidence that He will care for you.
